We live in a world of “Go, go, go!” So many of us spend too much time living in our heads. Either we’re replaying past events in our minds — what happened earlier today, last week, last year—or we’re planning for, worrying about, or fantasizing about some imagined future that never really comes about quite like we pictured. Being present, right here, right now, is something that is far more elusive for most people.
Nowhere is this more frustrating than when having sex. Have you ever had the experience of being in a sexual situation with someone only to realize that you’ve been lost up in your head through most or even all of it? To say that is disappointing is an understatement.
Sex is exceptionally great when all of that endless mind chatter ceases, and nothing exists except you and the person you’re rolling around with. Sometimes, this “just happens,” but it’s also something that you can train yourself to experience on a regular basis.
It all starts with awareness. First, you need to simply start noticing when you “go away.” When you notice, simply come back. Use your five senses as a tool. Tune into your sight, hearing, smell, taste, and of course, touch. What can you notice right now? Tuning into your senses gives you a more sensual experience. Get it? When you’ve noticed that you’ve “gone away” again, simply tune back in once more. Through this constant repetition of noticing and returning to the present moment, it becomes easier and easier, and you’ll begin to notice that the need to return becomes less frequent, because you are simply here more of the time.
This is a practice that you can bring into all areas of your life, but nowhere is the payoff more enjoyable than with sex.
